HOOPTOBER ONE NIGHT THIRTEEN: + PODCAST MACABRE 2022 HORROR CHALLENGE #38: WRITTEN AND/OR DIRECTED BY TAKASHI MIIKE + 2022 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 15: TAKASHI MIIKE WEEK Miike in full absurdist genre-deconstruction mode. I don't think I was at all ready to see this one when I did in the mid-'00s and just getting into Miike and modern J-horror and yakuza pictures. So much of this relies on knowledge of the narrative and visual conventions of those kinds of movies that it can be tough to parse otherwise. That said, I'm still not entirely sure that this movie really holds together outside of being this wild junk sculpture of early-'00s Japanese genre flicks and actors, but the last 20 minutes or so are still some of the most unhinged stuff I've ever seen in any movie ever. A toast to Miike!
