1st Annual Criterion Challenge: Week 13: Wes Anderon's Top 10 I was surprised by how much this one had in common with "Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" on a conceptual level, although I like how this one forgoes the wild perspective shifts of the later movie in favor of just bolting us down to this particular situation without any of the escape hatches built into "Discreet Charm". The cutaways to outside of the house -- which crucially establish that this is all really happening in the movie's base reality -- also prevent the story from going too far off the rails into pure surrealism where nothing has any basis in reality.
