1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 46: Directed by Antonioni I think I might have gone into this one with faulty expectations based on having seen the De Palma's BLOW-OUT, which I now see as less of a remake per se and more as a wholesale re-imagining through the lens of Hitchcockian thrillers than the more elliptical treatment employed by Antonioni. I appreciated the ambiguity of the mystery, where even though the film makes it clear that the main character is following a series of clues buried in his images, I still felt like I was at something of a remove from his perceptions. The blurry images in the blow-ups could have been anything at all, but to the protagonist they're unmistakable signs of murder and conspiracy, with the final tennis-match sequence signaling the complete breakdown of reality versus the projected image.
