a review of 冷血惊魂

2022 Criterion Challenge Week 4/Category 21: Bill Hader's Top 10 Definitely more of a pure psychological piece than I was expecting. I had always envisioned something a bit more Hitchcockian when I've heard the movie described, but what we get here feels almost like a precursor to Cronenberg or Aronofsky's explorations of psychosexual paranoia. The way in which Catherine Deneuve's entire situation just keeps devolving over the course of the second half is pretty amazing, to the point where it's hard to tell what the objective reality of the film is until it's confirmed for us near the end. It makes me want to rewatch it again sometime when I'm feeling a little more mentally together, because it is harrowing in a way that movies generally didn't go for at this point in time.
