FLOPUARY #4 + 2024 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 29: LESLIE NIELSEN WEEK Held off on watching this one for a bunch of years, but got curious enough to watch because I kinda enjoyed the History of the World Part 2 series and wondered if I should revisit Mel Brooks's *earlier* late-career output to see how it's aged. Weirdly enough this isn't an entirely bad remake of the classic Universal Dracula (with occasional nods to the then-recent Coppola version), but the jokes are pretty thin on the ground and rarely more ambitious than a few pratfalls or a bit of dumb-clever wordplay here or there. It's not just a real comedown from the comedic heights of Young Frankenstein 20 years earlier, but lacking in even the Mad Magazine-level parodic energy of Spaceballs or Robin Hood: Men in Tights just a few years before. That said, I don't think Leslie Nielsen is a bad fit for the Brooks style, and he's doing a semi-credible Dracula performance outside of some of the sillier bits. It's just a pity that the rest of the movie doesn't quite justify its own existence.
