#17: O Brother Where Art Thou (Netflix) Another rewatch (I haven't seen this since its original theatrical run) to relax on a lazy Sunday night. I remembered liking the movie okay on my previous watch, but not being entirely sure about whether the episodic nature of the story made it a random mishmash or if there was a structure there that I wasn't getting. Knowing that it was imperfectly borrowed from The Odyssey compounded my unsureness, because at the time I was also sort of a stickler for getting adaptations "right". I realized only years later and only after watching a bunch more Coen Brothers films (although I haven't watched *all* of them, something I mean to remedy this year) that the mishmash *is* the structure. The storyline and characters are only suggested by The Odyssey, but the heart of the movie is the burlesque of high and low Southern culture, embodied by the mix of American folk, country, and blues on the soundtrack.
