HOOPTOBER ONE NIGHT TWENTY-EIGHT: + PODCAST MACABRE 2022 HORROR CHALLENGE #20: ANY HORROR FILM IN THE NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY Like a lot of people, I have semi-complicated feelings about Roman Polanski as a problematic fave, to the extent that I've spent the last 25+ years deliberately avoiding this movie on the pretext that I'd finally get around to seeing it when Polanski finally croaks. This year, I finally lost patience with waiting for that eventuality and pulled the trigger. And damn it all to hell, this thing is just as much of a masterpiece as everyone said. I don't think there's anything I can really add to the critical mass on this that hasn't been said before, but this is beginning to end a truly amazing piece of work on a level that I don't think mainstream horror films really started to plumb until a few years later, and didn't quite reach again until we started seeing the re-popularization of similarly slow-burning arthouse (not to say "elevated" 🤮) horror in the 2010s.
