#65 (March 6/31) This is a great and rare example of a satirical horror film that works as a send-up of other movies in the genre, as well as an on-target critique of real-life social issues, while also working as a seriously-intended film of the genre. I've seen enough meta horror films to be basically comfortable with the concept of a film that singles out the viewer as complicit in the onscreen mayhem, the whole "this is what you wanted to see?" paradox of postmodern horror and all. But this is the first one that made me really feel like I needed to more thoroughly check myself afterwards. Even though I *knew* going in that things weren't going to be okay with the Armitage family, and of course was also on board with sniffing out the countless microaggressions against our protagonist, it never fully occurred to me that the girlfriend (our example of scrubbed-clean white liberal womanhood) might be in cahoots until it basically dropped into the audience's lap. My belief in intersectional feminism figuratively snuck up behind my awareness of pervasive systemic racism and brained it with a tire iron, and I have to hand it to Jordan Peele for pointing out the blind spot. I could probably write at least ten more paragraphs on this movie, but I need to eat, so it will wait for another time.
