#64 (March 5/31) I've only dipped a toe into Italian horror before, and thought this might be a good one to use as a starting point for digging a little deeper into the genre. The sets and makeup effects were pretty stunning in comparison with other films of the same era, and the print and digitization on Mubi was crystal-clear. It's interesting also to see how much of the gothic horror genre is built around basically recycling "Dracula" in slightly more inventive ways. All the tropes are basically here: Undead demonic monsters, virginal women getting their bodies hijacked by evil, carriages riding through fog in the eastern European countryside, aloof young heroes who basically just ride out the movie until things sort themselves out at the end, and so on.
