Dagon places a larger than average emphasis on the often underappreciated body horror aspects of Lovecraftian fiction, as a group of vacationers end up stranded in a secluded village populated by the titular Great Old One's strange half-human offspring. It isn't even until the final act that things like unavoidable fates predetermined by the wills of creatures beyond our understanding come into play at all. Up to that point it's just watching the protagonist dodge weird fish people. The action can be kind of goofy, what with watching the lead do boneheaded stuff to draw attention to himself while being chased or almost getting drowned in dirty toilets. It never dives too deeply into B-movie cheese to prevent the extreme, graphic ritualistic brutality or fantastic looking monsters from being effective however. I was consistently impressed with the movie's visuals. The budget clearly didn't go into the camera which gives a grainy, cheap quality to the imagery, but rather the props, location, gore, and the grotesque mutations of its inhuman threats that have been expertly brought to life so as to catch the eye and feel believable, save for some bad CGI in spots. This may not be the classiest or most refined option out there, but it still manages to capture some of that warped appeal the Cthulhu mythos has. It's not an exploration of the lore and focuses more on the physical than the cosmic terror of those stories, yet they prove to be elements no less fascinating or unsettling. So if you're a fan of Lovecraft and the nightmarish ocean-dwelling entities he created, I'd say this is definitely worth seeking out.
