2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 3: Anime Week I remember reading about this movie in animation catalogs and fan publications in the 90s, and always kind of took it as a novelty for true die-hards without ever actually watching it. So it was kind of a fun surprise to discover all these years later that the infamous "otaku documentary" anime I'd heard about was in actuality a fictionalized but semi-accurate version of the formation of Gainax. Apparently, all of the "otaku" who show up in the live action interview segments are actual Gainax staff, including Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. The movie itself gets perhaps a bit too involved with the details of overseas production of plastic model kits and such, but it's a fun look at what anime fandom was like 30 years ago at a time when the industry was at its peak output.
