HOOPTOBER 3.0 NIGHT TWENTY-TWO: Much better than its reputation, but also just silly and misguided enough to come across as overly-slick '90s camp instead of the darkly satirical tragicomedy it wanted to be. David Thewlis initially seems wildly miscast, but does some interesting work here as a sniveling, cowardly antihero. Fairuza Balk is pretty memorable as Moreau's ill-fated daughter/catgirl test subject, and this role makes a good companion to her turn in The Craft the same year. Val Kilmer gets some good full-gonzo character moments before his performance completely falls into literal caricature. Brando honestly isn't bad here, and I can see what he was going for in terms of updating Charles Laughton's portrayal of Moreau for something like modern day.
