HOOPTOBER 4.0 NIGHT NINETEEN: Another pretty deadly watch for me, with Carpenter doing a disappointing retread of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 with a red-state abortion clinic being menaced by redneck Ron Perlman and his wildly miscast sons. The screenplay (by Drew McWeeny and Rebecca Swan) doesn't so much have a solid position on the abortion debate as much as it simply uses the hot-button controversy as a vehicle for edgy shoot-em-ups, creature FX, and gore. Having read McWeeny's film criticism for several years now, I have to assume that if he had another chance to do this one over he'd have a much different take, but as it is this one feels too half-baked and amateurish to really work.
