February: 18/28 I was born a bit too late to really experience Richard Pryor in his main cultural moment in the 1970s, but looking back now it's easy to see his influence on a whole generation of comedy that came afterwards. Some of his material has aged better than others, but the key thing that I got from watching Pryor here is how you can always see him thinking on stage. He's not just performing well-honed bits, he's mentally tuning them as he goes, embellishing or pulling things back as needed. It's interesting to see how much further we've come in certain areas (Pryor's raunchiest sex jokes seem fairly tame here) and how little progress we've made in others, notably in terms of race relations.
