I've been thinking about Bugonia for a little over a week now and I've had a hard time putting words to my thoughts. The idea I've been toying with is that Bugonia is basically the story of Noah gone completely awry (though I'll admit that it could be because I saw the movie quite soon after re-engaging with the Noah story again, thanks to the cyclical nature of Torah study). The parallels I've drawn up in my head are very loose and obtuse, but I just can't shake them. To say less about that and more about the movie, I thought Jesse Plemons was excellent and kind of heartbreaking, I thought Emma Stone was pitch-perfect, and I very much liked the cat-and-mouse - is he on to something or is he crazy?; is she human or is she alien? - thing going on. I was initially a bit iffy on the ending, but in this weird little Noah-myth-thing I've spun up in my head, I think it actually works quite well. For the best take on the movie and its ending: A Tony on here that I follow wrote a great review that I've read multiple times now because it's just lovely. Regardless of what you thought of the movie or my ramblings about Noah, you should go and read it, too. Anyway... Love that Yorgos! (Yes, I know it's an adaptation of a Korean movie adapted from a book. No, I haven't seen or read either of these sources.)
