2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 30: Psychotronic Encyclopedia Week With apologies to Dick Durock as Swamp Thing, I can't help but feel like casting a charismatic, nuanced actor like Ray Wise as Alec Holland and then swapping him out for a burly stuntman in prosthetics was a big missed opportunity. Granted, I don't know how that might have come off with early-80s FX or if Wise just didn't want to sit for the makeup application, but it would have been great to have him in the mix somehow. As it is, the movie doesn't expend much effort in trying to make us really believe him and Swampy are the same dude (never mind what Alan Moore had to say in his subsequent comics run) so it's hard to feel the personal stakes in his confrontation with Arcane later in the film. All in all, it was a movie I kinda enjoyed just for the campiness of the whole thing, but I wish maybe it had been just a little more. I might need to check out the DC Universe series just to see how they handled the source material as a palate cleanser.
