2019 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 20: HAUNTED HOUSE WEEK I dug it! Haunted house / ghost movies don’t always work on me, because the moment the characters start accepting cheap parapsychology as real is usually when I start to check out. But even though this movie introduces both ghost-hunter and psychic-medium elements, it quickly discards both of these frames in favor of Claire’s own POV and her mostly-undefined psychological and emotional trauma. It was very much about the experience of a vulnerable, overimaginative young person in unusual circumstances, and that made it feel so much more grounded and relatable than more overtly supernatural stories do. It was well worth a watch!
