MANNVANUARY FOUR: BONUS: Finishing out the marathon with a Gina Prince-Bythewood that I hadn't seen yet. I haven't read the original novel, but from what I can tell Bythewood took a fairly tropey southern gothic written consciously in the footsteps of Huck Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird as a white woman's remembrance of growing up in the Jim Crow era, and added just a dash of magical realism and afro-futurism/optimism to a story with some very bleak aspects. I wish it had centered more on the trio of sisters than the main character's angst around her dead mother, but this was a pleasant enough watch.
