HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT THIRTY: Kind of takes its time to get going, but once you get to the midpoint it's a weird backyard slip-and-slide down into the depths of depravity. Not only do the lo-fi freak crime-picture elements give way to actual exploitation-horror of the Spider Baby/Hills Have Eyes/Texas Chainsaw variety, but by the end it seems as though Divine has undergone an apotheosis to become a Godzilla-like menace that can only be brought down by swift and decisive military action. It's easy to underestimate Waters' filmmaking chops at this point in his career, but he really knows what he's doing in the last 20 minutes.
