HOOPTOBER NINE! NIGHT SIX! + 2022 Criterion Challenge Week 38/Category 13: Science Fiction Even stranger and more dreamlike than I had anticipated, the horror of BLACK MOON exists on a purely Freudian conceptual level. Our Alice-like main character is introduced to us on the run from militarized depictions of masculinity and femininity, finding refuge in a house seemingly haunted by those same psychosexual themes. It's difficult to tell what the base reality of the film consists of, to the extent that I began to wonder if one existed here, outside of the minds of the filmmakers and audience.
