HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT TWENTY-FOUR + 2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 42: GOTHIC HORROR WEEK + 1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 42: The 1960s This one doesn't really become horror until the last 20 minutes or so, but I appreciate seeing how it might have influenced a bunch of other horror/thriller films of the last 50+ years. I think I'm definitely going to have to rewatch it to really understand what I was seeing, but I liked the device of presenting the whole narrative as Ullmann's recollections of von Sydow's mental breakdown. It immediately defuses the basic woman-in-jeopardy conflict (since she clearly survives) and invites us to examine von Sydow's deterioration in a more detached way, up to the point where we fully enter his delusions and experience them for ourselves.
