MANNVANUARY FOUR: Didn't know anything about this one going in, but was pleasantly surprised. Part churchy morality play, part avant-garde musical, part broad supernatural farce, the mix of elements here is a little rough at first but once I got what Van Peebles was doing I was won over. A lot of it has to with the earthy wholesomeness in every scene, there's something very earnest and unironic about all of it and I admire that coming from a director like MVP, who doesn't shy away from ugly truths and complicated morality. It feels like an actual exorcism of negativity committed to film, and for that I can respect it a lot.
