Don't let the Disney+ limited-run release fool you, this is essentially Captain America 4. The visuals, special effects, and action are all theater quality with certain events having a significant impact on how aspects of the MCU will look moving forward. I have to wonder if it really benefitted from being a miniseries though. Yeah, we're basically getting the ultimate director's cut version this way, but compared to its predecessor WandaVision which used the format to try something truly new that wouldn't have worked in a film, all we're really getting here is a bunch of additional storylines that don't always contribute anything interesting. I'd say the most egregious example of this would have to be the stuff with Sam's (The Falcon) family. I get that it was included to develop him more as a person in a way he hadn't previously gotten the chance to while playing second fiddle to the rest of the Avengers, but these moments feel completely disconnected from the whole and honestly add nothing to the overall bigger picture of what's going on here. The increased length at which the narrative plays out also leads to a lot of downtime where the show is obviously dragging it's feet to run out the clock until it's finally time for the next significant development to occur. As a result of that, I feel the reason this was released in an episodic streaming structure is twofold. The first being that the villain(s) and conflict don't really lend themselves to quite the same level of blockbuster spectacle we'd typically expect to see when paying for a ticket, and the second being the emphasis on political messaging/social commentary. The latter of which didn't click with me at first due to it starting off as a bunch of the "black this, white that" talk that was all too common during its peak in the Trump era (and is still continuing…) and just makes some characters look racist who really shouldn't, but it eventually won me over with its overall theme of how America should simply view black people and their contributions in the same way we would the average white person's, and how our politicians need to do better by us all. While I would have ultimately preferred this to have been a traditional movie thanks to the minor pacing and writing woes, when this is firing on all cylinders it is great! A fine example of Disney and Marvel delivering the near-identical quality of thrills directly to your living rooms and laptops that you would that you would typically have to go to a cinema to see. Something we only got brief glimpses of in WandaVision, but is on full display here and gets me really excited to check out the rest of what Disney+ has to offer on this front.
