HOOPTOBER 4.0 NIGHT TEN: Weirdly one of the better later HELLRAISERs, although it takes a LONG time to get to the "punchline" that ties it back to the original films. In the meantime, we've got Dean Winters (still firmly in gritty dramatic mode, pre-30 ROCK, but still enjoyable as a macho doofus type) kind of tumbling through a weird supernatural-noir plot that feels like reheated Cronenberg leftovers with occasional drop-ins from Doug Bradley as Pinhead that made me wonder when the HELLRAISER of it all would actually kick in. In some ways I would have preferred a more conventional sort of HELLRAISER lega-sequel to the weird negative-space version of one that we get here. But I do have to admire how director Rick Bota started his movie with a car crashing off a bridge into a lake, and it took me all the way to the end to realize that he was doing a riff on CARNIVAL OF SOULS the whole time.
