2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 13: 70s Disaster Week This one takes a while to get going, and then once it's going it keeps taking a while. The storytelling feels extremely loose, almost like the random subplots from a mid-week episode of a daily soap opera rather than a taut thriller. Even threads that eventually pay off (like the old lady stowaway) feel ultimately incidental, and ones that feel like they should be the centerpiece of the film (the guy with the bomb in his carry-on) feel like mere plot conveniences. This movie made me realize even more acutely how much the arrival of Steven Spielberg would shake up the art of the movie thriller a few years later. Compared to Jaws, this movie is practically inert.
