1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 5: Bruce Lee's Greatest Hits I had never seen this movie in its entirety until now, although I recall seeing significantly more of the original footage as part of a documentary a long time ago, so I had a very different idea about what this movie was going in. Seeing the actual theatrical version was kind of shocking in not only the dearth of scenes featuring the actual Lee (played for over 85% of its running time by several unconvincing body doubles), but also in its use of real news footage of Lee's funeral that included shots of his actual dead body in an open casket. Lee's only appearance in the movie is in the last 15 minutes, which uses only the barest scraps of the footage Lee shot for his original vision of the film but is nonetheless pure visual poetry in comparison to the dull imitation of Roger Moore-era Bond that characterized the previous 90 minutes. I think I need to look over the special features on the Criterion disc to really understand all there is to get out of this one, and what was left on the cutting room floor
