1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 33: The 1980s I found this one to be completely overwhelming (in a good way) on a first watch, so I'll be glad to come back to it again sometime so I can really parse it on a scene-by-scene basis. I don't know how Klimov pulled the performance he did out of Alexsei Kravchenko, but his complete transformation by the end is one of the most sobering things I've ever seen. It's one of the few anti-war movies I know of that never succumbs to the usual sense of spectacle to really show the cost of war, not just on the people who fight it, but for the regular folks who have to live with it.
