This is a long slow burn that is 90% an indictment of suburban conformity, only turning to actual horror in the last dozen minutes. I'm not sure I actually enjoyed it as much as admired it for the acting, directing, cinematography. But I guess a quality film is supposed to unsettle us on a visceral level. Some of the idealized home life came across to me as obviously cringey but I bet it landed differently in the year it came out. It does feel like one of those movies a thoughtful person should watch at least once in their lifetime, but I understand those who don't ever want to rewatch it afterwards.
