2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 9: Charles Bronson Week I'd known of this movie/series' reputation as a gleefully fascist urban revenge thriller since I was a kid, but seeing it all in motion was another thing entirely. As an encapsulation of the old bromide that a conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged, and in its conceptualization of cities as open-air playgrounds for giggling, single-minded psychopaths, and in its romanticization of guns as a totem for regained manhood, it's basically straight-up NRA/Republican propaganda. Bronson is a solid and even sympathetic presence in the movie, but his performance is in service to deeply despicable cinematic worldview.
