Not as good as Talk to Me, but Danny and Michael Philippou prove that wasn’t just a one-off. Bring Her Back trades the big thrills for more sadistic, gross-out chills. The real focus here is on the story and themes. This a heartbreaking tale of grief, loss, love, mistakes, and abuse. It’s powerful stuff the hits like a shotgun blast directly to your emotions that’s only bolstered by the fact that the brother directors pull no punches when it comes the visuals of any of the unpleasant, graphic stuff occurring onscreen. This left me genuinely sad, but in a strangely good way. The former comedy YouTubers have cemented themselves as among the modern greats of the horror genre with their sophomore outing where they weren’t afraid to sacrifice constant edge-of-your-seat excitement in order to tell a real, twisted, and haunting yarn that’s actually about something. Because of that I will eagerly await and tune in for whatever they do next.
