2022 Criterion Challenge Week 5/Category 37: Out at Criterion Although I knew the basic contours of Harvey Milk's story, seeing the facts of both his rise in SF politics and his eventual assassination laid out alongside the interview segments with his friends and associates put a few things into focus for me. First, it highlighted the absolute continuity between the civil rights activism of 40+ years ago and today. And I also see a distinct parallel between the murderous criminal impulses displayed by "nice family man" Dan White, who stormed into a government building with the intention of forcibly retaking what he thought was rightfully his, and the exact same energy we saw with the self-styled "patriots" at the Capitol insurrection.
