1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 16: Film Noir Pretty much a perfect encapsulation of the noir aesthetic, from the hard-boiled narration to the rear-projected scenery in the driving scenes. It keeps that balance where the protagonist bounces between "totally getting away with it" and "totally fucked" on a constant churn for most of its running time. If there is a flaw, it's that the movie ends on a comparative whimper instead of just leaving us in that hotel room after the climax. That said, I can see myself revisiting this one many times with friends and family over the next several years now that I've finally gotten around to discovering it.
