Even crazier and pulpier than the well-known Simpsons parody episode led me to suspect. Mitchum feels like an implacable primal force of evil, but at the same time I also felt a weird sympathy for him going up against Peck as this symbol of uptight, unforgiving law and order conservatism. That Peck's character also becomes deeply morally compromised in his struggle to protect his family from Mitchum makes it feel oddly relevant to the present-day discussion of policing and criminal justice reform.
