a review of 迷惑

MANNVANUARY THREE, #3: I'm not sure if Lee hits every target he's aiming at here (and I think he inadvertently hits some that might not have been wholly intended) but I can't fault his ambition. In the hands of skilled performers like Tommy Davidson and Savion Glover, the tropes of the original minstrel performances play as both grotesque and shockingly recognizable as part of the DNA of modern entertainment. Even when some of the behind the scenes performances (Damon Wayans' and Michael Rapaport's characters come to mind) come across as overly broad or caricatured, I wonder if that isn't part of the point, that everyone is implicated and distorted within the structure of the minstrel show when those images dominate culture.
