HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT TWENTY-THREE + 2021 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 42: GOTHIC HORROR WEEK I wasn't sure exactly what to expect from this one, but like how it stays fairly realistic (if not necessarily brimming with historical accuracy) and never lapses into the witches-are-real conceit that I see pop up occasionally in movies that include witch hunts as a plot point. This shows in pretty unambiguous terms that the real monsters were the witch hunters and the social chaos that let them do their work. I think my only real misgiving with this one is that Vincent Price is giving a fairly restrained, dour performance that doesn't really use any of his natural villainous charisma. I appreciate his commitment to the demands of the role and not breaking tone, but it's not as fun to watch as some of his others from around this same time.
