2022 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 4: SONNY CHIBA WEEK A genuinely weird entry in the '70s martial arts canon. Sonny Chiba is basically playing the karate version of a slasher villain here, eschewing the raw athleticism of a Bruce Lee or the wittily choreographed acrobatics of a Jackie Chan in favor of lots of power poses and twisted facial expressions while dispatching his foes in messy ways. It's easy to see how it stood out from the crowd as a cult favorite in the wave of movies that tried to capitalize on the kung-fu craze, even if the "hero" comes across as a total psychopath.
