2025 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 1: ANIME WEEK I watched the original '80s OVA series of Patlabor a few years ago, and was somewhat charmed by the characters in spite of the extremely cheap animation and lackadaisical approach to action. I was hoping that perhaps the first full-length movie would have more of what I was looking for in a mecha anime, but sadly it was kind of a talky snooze, with an extremely drawn-out mystery padded by minutes on end of dull police-procedural business. I see the reviews for this are in general pretty glowing, but whatever people are seeing here in terms of visuals and themes was clearly lost on me.
