HOOPTOBER NINE! NIGHT THIRTY-THREE! + 2022 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 44: JOE BOB BRIGGS WEEK I actually think Charles B. Pierce is a pretty decent director, and the movie has a very pleasant kind of afternoon nature-show kind of vibe, coupled with the silly/sincere easy-listening songs on the soundtrack. Ultimately it kind of mystifies me in the same way that Blair Witch did when it came out, in that it's the sort of horror movie that depends wholly on whether you find extremely jumpy white people shouting and stumbling around in the dark compellingly scary on its own, or if you need something a level or two up from that in terms of physical/psychological threats. As it is, it feels like a forerunner of the Ghost Hunter shows or "did anyone hear that at 2 AM last night" posts on NextDoor. It scares me more as a reflection of the people who were taken in by it than as a thing in and of itself.
