Seems a little bit underrated based on the reviews I'm seeing here on LB. It's definitely a glossy, '90s blockbuster-style studio Western, which wasn't really in vogue at the time. But on the other hand you have to hand it to Mario Van Peebles (who makes sure to shoot and light himself like he's posing for a Harlequin romance) for not only making a crazy popcorn Black Western, but in using it to draw attention to a type of historical American racial violence that wouldn't be fully recognized by the mainstream culture for another decade or two.
