Feb 24/28 I needed a good, frivolous chaser after going through the emotional wringer of "Room", so I went ahead and fired up "Planet Hulk" in preparation for the Hulk's appearance in the next Thor film coming out later this year. Although I'd heard this comics arc basically pitched as a Marvel Universe retelling of "John Carter", it ultimately felt more like a mishmash of "Gladiator" and "Mad Max" with a bit of generic zombie movie thrown in for good measure. As with most Marvel direct-to-video animated features, the animation isn't bad but still not terribly good; The characterizations of the heroes and villains are mostly serviceable but otherwise pretty unmemorable. The plotting feels episodic, lurching from one long, indifferently directed fight scene to another, with just enough connective tissue to hold it all together. I look forward to seeing how Taika Waititi manages to spin the concept of gladiator Hulk (which is admittedly quite cool) into something fun and/or compelling, but I can definitely see why Marvel didn't necessarily think it could sustain its own live-action MCU feature film.
