a review of 美女与野兽

#80 (March 21/31) I'm not sure what I was expecting from this movie. On one hand, I was absolutely expecting a nearly shot-for-shot remake of one of my favorite films from the '90s Disney animation resurgence. But on the other hand, I was hoping that it would have enough novel stuff in it to justify making a whole other movie. And strangely enough, I wasn't really satisfied by either in this case. There's a lot of genuinely puzzling choices made here in terms of what the filmmakers have decided to emphasize and downplay from the original film, and it just feels very muddled as a result. At best it's a watchable cover version of a classic, but there isn't really much beyond that.
