2021 Cult Movie Challenge Week 4: Jesus Franco Week Movie #2 Watching this one as the back half of a Jess Franco vampire double feature was kind of interesting, insofar as I got about 30 minutes in and realized that Franco had literally remade Dracula twice in the space of a year: Once as a fairly hidebound costume drama with Christopher Lee, and then again as work of lesbian vampire erotica with an actress (Soledad Miranda) from the previous film. He also recycles a little bit of his debut film "The Awful Dr. Orloff" in the character of "Morpho", the brute henchman of our vampiress. The basic structure and even certain scenes (hope you like doctor's offices!) come as close as they can to being the same without being completely identical. Franco's direction (plus the weirdly futuristic early-analog lounge electronica soundtrack) does a lot to distract from the similarities. But the real MVP here Miranda and her portrayal of the Countess as an ultimately sympathetic monster. Seeing that she died in a car accident shortly after filming this role (and several other movies with Franco in the same year) one wonders what she might have gone on to do had her career gone longer.
