ℍ𝕆𝕆ℙ𝕋𝕆𝔹𝔼ℝ 𝔼𝕃𝔼𝕍𝔼ℕ ℕ𝕀𝔾ℍ𝕋 𝔽𝕀𝕍𝔼: More of a leisurely-paced pastoral drama with a hearty dose of magical realism than what most of us might think of as "horror." But I admire how the filmmakers manage to sneak a palpable feeling of dread into the movie through the long takes, sinister soundscapes, and general ambiguity of the characters and setting. The effect for most of the film is to instill a sense of unease, and for a while it does feel like a metaphor for the societal forces that challenge and threaten to break apart nontraditional families of all kinds. That this metaphor becomes wildly literal in the final minutes gives me some pause to wonder about whether the filmmakers intended it all as a joke, or what. Either way, I'd say this is worth watching for the gorgeous cinematography and effects work, as well as Noomi Rapace's performance.
