Hooptober, Night Fourteen: I enjoyed Samara Weaving in the title role, but I couldn't help but think that this movie could have been both just a little bit more substantial, and also that it might have benefitted from not being a Netflix movie. Like with a lot of original films produced for the service, I feel as though there are ideas in the script that could have been developed just a little bit more. As it is, we don't really find out anything about Bee or her group or what it is that they even want to accomplish with the ritual they were going to enact. It feels like there aren't enough characters in the mix to really deliver on both the filmmakers' desire to show spectacular slasher-movie kills and also move the story forward. It's clearly trying to model itself on horror comedies like "Evil Dead 2" or "Tucker & Dale" in terms of depicting slapstick murder scenarios. But the violence lacks impact and feels weightless and cartoonish, to the point that there's a few scenes early on where the consequences seem very unclear to the point of feeling like an afterthought.
