2019 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 39: JESS FRANCO WEEK I went into this one mostly blind, only to discover during the first several minutes that it was apparently a remake of the 1960 French film Eyes Without A Face, which I'm literally watching next for Gothic Horror Week, so it'll be interesting to compare the approaches. The main thing that stuck out to me was the decision to split the story down the middle; One half centers on the mad surgeon abducting and vivisecting women of the night, and the other half focuses on the investigation of these crimes by a police detective and his opera-singer girlfriend. This second storyline is nearly pointless, with the detective mostly existing to learn things the audience already knows, and the girlfriend only existing to be stalked, kidnapped, and groped by the surgeon's brute assistant, thereby giving her boyfriend his one and only lead on the case.
