2020 Cult Movie Challenge Week 31: Blaxploitation Week I was curious about this one because of the numerous comparisons between it and Boots Riley's "Sorry To Bother You," which in retrospect seem to be more about the blatant overdubbing of lead actor Arnold Johnson (by an uncredited Downey) than the actual themes of either film. I wish the satire came from a more authentically Black perspective (Downey is the sole credited writer) or at least was just a bit sharper than just being a documentary-style frame around a series of outrageous commercial parodies. Although there's some clever visual and conceptual work here, in the end this is a 1960s white film professional's concept of what things created by contemporary Black hipsters and radicals would look like, instead of the other way around.
