HOOPTOBER OCHO NIGHT ELEVEN & 1st Annual Criterion Challenge Week 39: New Korean Cinema For a good long time, I was content to have just seen the 2001 Japanese musical remake by Takashi Miike ("Happiness of the Katakuris", which is also marvelous), but now that I've become much more versed in modern Korean thrillers this one feels just as essential. It's a satisfying chunk of Coen-esque noir-comedy that has more than a couple of clear parallels (and one Song Kang-ho) in common with last year's Best Picture winner "Parasite." Speaking of Song, it's fun to see both him and "Oldboy" star Choi Min-sik in their early roles here, before they had both become huge stars in Korea and around the world.
