2022 CULT MOVIE CHALLENGE WEEK 14: BLAXPLOITATION WEEK I'm not sure what I was expecting from the one and only Sun Ra-made motion picture, but this gave me some of what I was expecting (wild jazz psychedelia) and just a little bit more in the form of Sun Ra's bizarre but somehow not totally incomprehensible personal philosophy. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether he was specifically preaching a brand of radical Black separatism or if he was proposing to instead use his music and message of brotherhood to create his space utopia on Earth, but it just makes him and his group even more fascinating as figures. I want to dig into some of the outside documentaries made about Sun Ra to learn a little more about what he was about, but this makes a wonderfully disorienting introduction.
