2021 Cult Movie Challenge Week 8: MST3K Week A pretty unique genre oddity that combines the appeal of James Bond and Batman in one thing, with some pretty decent action direction by Mario Bava. Unfortunately, John Philip Law (who would show up later this same year in "Barbarella") is something of a cold fish as the title character, remaining a strangely impassive, morally-ambiguous cipher all the way up to the bizarrely drawn out final scene. As a character, Diabolik reminds me a lot of Lupin III as he was depicted in the early Monkey Punch mangas (as a dangerous, lust-driven criminal mastermind) before being made a bit more sympathetic by the various anime films and TV series. I'd be curious to see some more recent iterations of Diabolik to see if a similar softening process might have happened with him.
