HOOPTOBER, NIGHT TWENTY-FIVE: I have to admit, I'm a little bit bummed that I'm finally getting around to this one 13 years after its initial release, if for no other reason than I feel like a lot of later media (like Cabin in the Woods, the early seasons of Dexter, even jokier meta-horror stuff like What We Do in the Shadows) took this premise and went farther and better with it. And although I certainly liked the movie, there were plenty of times where I wished that the script has gone through a few more revisions and was maybe just a nudge more clever in some of its observations about movie cliches and the characters. (I think it also suffers a bit from being made in 2006, when we hadn't yet fully grasped our culture's problem with solitary men with unfettered access to weapons and invasive technologies, who develop weird psychosexual fixations on women they barely know. I guess that may be a bit unfair, but I would like to see somebody attempt something in this vein that actually takes our post-Gamergate reality into account.)
